  • All parents receive a copy of the 'Parents Handbook' which provides useful background information to life in Browning House and the local area.
  • All families have their own fully-furnished first floor bedroom or flat, shared with their children. There is insufficient space for parents' own furniture, but they are encouraged to bring personal possessions such as ornaments, stereos, wall posters and toys.
  • On admission, residents are given their own room and locker keys, £10.00 in cash and a phone card. There is a card phone for residents' use in the hallway. Incoming calls can be received by residents throughout the day and evening. There is a private telephone booth should parents wish to speak privately to their callers.
  • Browning House has a plentiful supply of baby equipment such as pushchairs, highchairs, cots, bedding, sterilisers etc that may be borrowed by parents whilst at the Unit. Should parents wish they may bring their own equipment.
  • There are washing machines and tumble dryers for residents to use.
  • There is a fridge, freezer and television in every room and parents may, if they wish, pay a £5.00 deposit for a remote TV control. The deposit will be refunded to them when they leave.
  • Resident parents retain their Income Support and will be charged a nominal weekly amount (£10 for a single parent and £12 for a couple) towards the cost of the utilities and laundry facilities. This also forms part of the assessment with regards to a parent’s ability to budget.
  • For the safety of all residents, rooms are monitored by a scanning audio system.
  • When parents move in, a note is made of items in the room provided by Browning House.
  • This list is checked again when residents leave, to ensure that nothing is missing. The items in the room are the responsibility of the resident and must be replaced should they be lost. If items are stolen, the police will be informed.
  • All medication must be passed to staff for safe keeping in the medicine room - however, residents are responsible for ensuring that they and their children take medication as prescribed.
  • Browning House is unable to accept family pets during a placement.
  • The Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
  • It is important that staff are aware when parents go out, not only from a safety point of view (should there be a fire) but also so messages can be taken if visitors arrive or phone calls are received in their absence.
  • Residents are requested to write on the white board in the administration office the time they leave the Unit, when they expect to return and where they are going. They must then hang their room keys on the key board, to be collected when they return.
  • On a parents discharge from the Unit they are expected to take all their belongings with them. On occasion this is not always possible; Browning House has limited storage space and can only store items for a period of 4 weeks. If belongings are not collected within 4 weeks of discharge they will be disposed of.

Please note: Where the word family/parent is used this means mother, father or couple.
